Please find below some information what is needed and how you can help and how you can send them to Turkey
Dear Friends:
We have confirmed with the Turkish Embassy that there still is an urgent
need for doctors, particularly surgeons.
Turkish Airlines - as much as its capacity permits - flies doctors free out
of their US ports in Miami, Chicago and New York.
We understand that there is a crisis center established at the Istanbul
airport which can direct the doctors into the disaster areas.
PLEASE DISTRIBUTE AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE AMONG PARTICULARLY TURKISH DOCTORS
IN THE US, because they will need less assistance once they get to Turkey.

Original Message
Dear Friends:
There is finally a list from Turkey about the most urgently needed
material for the disaster region.
Turkish Airlines has announced that it will fly - as much as its
capacity allows - relief supplies to Turkey for free.
Especially those of you in Miami, Chicago and New York - PLEASE
COORDINATE WITH YOUR LOCAL TURKISH AMERICAN ASSOCIATION(S) AND TRY TO
FIND HOSPITALS AND PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES who could be interested in
donating these supplies.
PARTICULARLY THOSE ASSOCIATIONS IN CHICAGO, MIAMI AND NEW YORK - IF YOUR
ASSOCIATION HAS COLLECTED DONATIONS ALREADY - AND HAS NOT TRANSFERED IT
YET TO TURKEY - CONSIDER BUYING THE MOST URGENTLY REQUIRED MATERIAL AND
HANDING IT TO TURKISH AIRLINES SO IT CAN GET TO ISTANBUL IMMEDIATELY.
Sincerely,
Guler Koknar

Dear Friends,
Your checks are pouring in, thanks. The first day count is about 4000
dollars combined with the checks sent to us by FORUM. The total in TC
Ziraat Bank is around 65,000 dollars (total of all accounts) which is a
woderful fýgure for 48 hours.
I need volunteers with large cars/trucks/vans monday and tuesday to collect
surgical/medical supplies from companies in manhattan and queens, bring them
to my office for a count and paperwork, then deliver them to turkish
airlines cargo building in JFK. Turkish airlines is flying them to Kizilay
free of charge.
Zeynel Alhan and Melek Pulatkonak are working on getting medical/surgical
donation pledges. They got 25 cases of surgical gloves and 8 cases of face
masks. Other than the 70 boxes we already have, MALEV (Hungarian
Airlines) Cargo Services called. They cannot fly goods for free but they
will fly them for much lower prices avoiding most of the regular charges.
If people would like to donate for destinations other than KIZILAY, please
contact Vladimir at 718 656 2886. Schaeffer Trans in New Jersey will be
trucking all our medical supplies to JFK free of charge. I also have a
company which may pay for the air cargo for destinations other than KIZILAY,
please get in touch with me and let me know of the organization and what you
want to send. Turkish Airlines presently can do it free for KIZILAY only.
Gilda, Banu and Yonca are working here with me today. Calls and pledges are
still coming in. We sent a mass mailing to TAWA's address list (700
people) and flyers are being distributed by volunteers in Sunnyside.
Public Relations: In addition to the NY Post, Daily News articles and
Channel 7 segment Crane's Business Magazine is doing an article. A local
paper in Queens called Diversity is doing a story giving our campaign
information.
Let s keep up the good work.

DISTRIBUTION OF FLYERS, TALK TO THE MEDIA, ORGANIZE THE TURKISH VOLUNTEERS
WHO ARE PRESENTLY WORKING IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.
THANKS AGAIN. STAY WELL. HERE ARE THE LETTERS FROM ATAA:
NUR
Dear ATAA Members and Friends:
There has been an outburst of good-will and support to help the earthquake
relief efforts in Turkey, both from our community and outside of it.
Turkish-American organizations have been engaged widely in catching the
media attention and focusing them on the urgent need of donations. We will
have only a few more days to get the attention of the American public and
they are crucial. By now, Turkish organizations in the US and Canada have
galvanized the community in this aid effort. There are many accounts now
available where people can send their donations to. This looks confusing to
many Turks here, but what really counts at this point is that those Turks
who want to donate do it in one way or the other. Therefore, while we do not
discourage the collection of funds by many organizations - Turkish or
non-Turkish - please beware of the reliability of the collecting
agency/person.
The Turkish Embassy has also now opened an official account, here's the
information:
For Wire Transfers:
Riggs Bank NA
Embassy Banking Division
Washington, DC 20036
Account Name: Turkish Embassy Earthquake Victims Relief Fund
ABA 054000030 (for wire transfers)
Account # 17300827
For checks:
Turkish Embassy
Attention: Relief Fund
2525 Massachusetts Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20008
Write your checks to "Turkish Embassy" and into the memo section write
"Earthquake Victims Relief Fund."
On the other hand, to the American public at large we advise the following
action:
1- Direct Americans to the Red Cross. People can write a check to the
American Red Cross and designate it in the MEMO section the "Turkish
Earthquake Relief". They can either send it to their local Red Cross chapter
or to the Headquarters address:
American Red Cross
PO Box 37243
Washington, DC 20013
Donations can also be made by calling a toll-free number of the American Red
Cross 1-800 HELP NOW (1-800-435-7669). When you hear the recording press 1
to make a financial contribution and then 2 for International Response Fund
and then designate
your donation for the Turkish Earthquake Relief. Your donation will be
tax-deductible. You can use a credit card to make your donation.
This will direct potential donors to an organization - the Red Cross - they
know and trust - and that is crucial for the widespread success of the
campaign. The campaign will look unified and simple to the American public.
In the several TV and radio interviews that ATAA participated, we actually
did not even mention the account at Ziraat to keep things simple and clear.
2. Many of you have probably heard about or considered material donations -
blankets, foodstuff, medicine etc. We spoke to the Red Cross and the Turkish
Embassy about this. Right now there is no reliable system in Turkey to
facilitate the transfer of such goods to the victims. Red Cross specifically
encourages monetary donations and says the supplies needed can be bought
locally by the Red Crescent in Turkey. Obviously, this will have the added
benefit of helping the local economy.
3. The State Department told us that many coordination problems will be
addressed once the United Nations sets up its coordination agency in Turkey
and starts working between the Turkish authorities and international relief
efforts. That office could be established in a few days time. In the
meantime, you can direct American ngo's and relief organizations who contact
you with offers to help to the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance. This
is a 24-h operation center. It can be reached at 202-712-0750. Interested
volunteers can also call InterAction, a coalition of relief, development and
refugee assistance agencies at 202-667-8227 or visit their website at
www.interaction.org for information on ongoing relief activities by American
groups.
Sincerely,
Guler Koknar

I am looking for Mert Karakasli and Erol Ucucu both of Istanbul. Sollt ihr diesen Nachricht bekommen, bitte setzt Euch sofort mit mir in Verbindung. Ich habe mich beinah krank gemacht vor lauter Sorgen um Euch.
Have learned that Sheri and Karin Bryant; Penny Nii; Ed, Carol, and Janet Feigenbaum; Martin and Nickie Orrell; Vladimir Ivanosic; and Matthew Connelly stayed at the Hotel Pera Palas in Istanbul the night of August 8, and checked out the next day. At some point, they may have made their way through Ephesus and/or Bodrum. At Bodrum they would likely have gone scuba-diving. At this point, they have not checked back into the Hotel Pera Palas, but they may be en route to doing so, as they are scheduled to leave Istanbul August 22 or 23.
Please contact with any information as to their welfare and whereabouts. E-mail address: uwdepot@earthlink.net is good also.
Thanks,
