Funny, I work in North County area of San Diego and I didn't feel nothing. In fact the only way I knew there was an earthquake was because the DJ on the radio announced there was one. I went around my work area and asked my fellow co-workers if they felt an earthquake. All of them said no. Well I hope everyone is all right.

In Newport Beach, we swayed back and forth for a while. No big scare, just a lot of rolling. No damage either.

Preliminary Report: The Hector Mine Earthquake, 10/16/1999

A M7.0 earthquake occurred at 2:46 a.m. local time on 10/16/1999. The event was located in a remote, sparsely-populated part of the Mojave desert, approximately 47 miles east-southeast of Barstow and 32 miles north of Joshua Tree. The event is not considered an aftershock of the M7.3 Landers earthquake of 1992, although subsequent analysis will explore the relationship between these two events.

On average, an earthquake of this size is expected to generate approximately four aftershocks of M5 or larger within the next week. The largest early aftershock was a M5.3 event at 2:49 local time. A M5.8 aftershock occurred
at 5:57 a.m. local time with an epicenter approximately 15 kilometers south of the mainshock. As of 7:30 a.m. PDT 15 aftershocks of M4 or larger had occurred.

The earthquake occurred near the Pisgah fault, which strikes north-northwest through the eastern Mojave shear zone. Scientists with Caltech and the US Geological Survey are continuing to analyze the data to determine whether or not this fault was associated with the earthquake. Geologists are heading to the epicentral area to look for surface rupture, which is expected for an
earthquake of this magnitude.

(Updated 7:35 a.m., 10/16/99)

Also, if you go to the "Did you feel it?" web page { http://www-socal.wr.usgs.gov/report.html }
you can enter your own report about what you felt, resumting damage, etc., and view the resulting earthquake intensity map.

The first thing i saw were flashes of light outside my window. I thought it was lightning or something of that sort... but then i felt the slow, rolling motion of the quake. It was a bit nerve wrecking... but it wasn't that bad- although i did hear the water in our pool swishing around... it looked as if it had rained outside, with all the water spilling out!

I also saw flashes of light from the power going out! It was completely dark and the quake seemed to go on forever... it was rather long. My friend in La Jolla, San Diego immediately called me askeing me if we were ok here... she said she felt it rather strong there too. So I guess the quake was felt around a large portion of Southern California.

At approximately 2:50 a.m. I was woken up with my house and everything in it swaying as if we were on ocean waves. We live in El Centro, CA (12 miles from the Mexican border) and it seemed as if it lasted at least 45 seconds.

We live in Anaheim Hills. As the quake got stronger I had to yell to the kids to get up. I was waiting for it to end. It kept rolling. The aftershock was definitely felt. Had one thing fall in the family room. Everything is okay.

I live in Imperial County in the Southeast corner of CA. The quake woke me and seemed to last for a very long time. I knew it was a strong one but am amazed to learn how far the epicenter was from here. Thank God there have been no serious injuries or damages reported.
