I have a friend in Taichung teaching english. Anyone else heard from someone in Taichung about the scale of damage and casualties. Is there an official government site with more news?

Dear people of Taiwan;

We feel your pain deep in our hearths as people of TURKEY, who suffered the same disaster just few weeks ago. We are part of civic organisations who are trying to do their best to help the quake survivors. Please tell us if there is anything that we can do at this stage.

Sorry about another calamity.

I am looking at natural disasters in this last 1 month. Major earthquakes in Turkey, Greece and Taiwan and minors in Iran and China, Hurricane in the US, Fire in CA, Plane Accident (don't remember where), Building collapse in Russia, etc. And, I am also looking at political disasters and fights among humans. I think, in this month, the nature gave damage more than humans did for themselves. The real dangerous ogre that we haven't want to see is waking up. Can this cause a change in political and ideological bases in the world? I think high level strategic centers begun to consider this. If another strong disaster happens somewhere in the world, world public will make a pressure to these centers to apply. In this case, secondary ideologies may search their roots. For example, lets consider the thought "one human can be superior to another" (one can have $billion while another can have $tousand) that is not available in theory but available in practice as we see. Will this thought be replaced soon by another thought, i.e by "in fact we are not very different so then we can make approximately an equal sharing"? Indeed, there is no other remedy, because this is required either for challenging with nature or for harmony with it..

The painful thing is his inability (of intelligent! human) to think before living such bad experiences..

My good wishes to victims of earthquakes in Turkey, Taiwan and Greece and victims of hurricane in the US, and also to other victims in other places..

Does anyone out there know much
about the condition in Tai-Chung?

Specifically Wu-Feng.

Thanks.

I tried my parents number, local police number
without success.

It is really sad for people over there
to live through this quake.

Thanks.

My sister Clare Ryland is on a business trip with Seebolt in Taichung. She has telephoned. She and all her colleagues are OK. Hoping to fly out to Singapore later today. No news of devastation levels in Taichung sorry.

I would hope that the United States has already conveyed the clear message to the mainland that ANY attempt to take advantage of this horrible tragedy will be met with an immediate and massive US response. Taiwan has many friends around the globe and they are all responding in a big way to help. US Naval forces have also been dispatched to the area to protect the tiny island nation from predators.

My cousin and his family are in Taichung. They teach at an American School. He was able to phone out to the US nearly 30 minutes afterwards. My Aunt spoke with him again at 7 pm eastern time. He says that noone is living in their homes, all have retreated to the outdoors. All the buildings are either destroyed or too shaky to trust. The water mains have broken and there is no power. The weather is rainy. They were in a second-story apartment and though very shaken and their possessions pretty basically destroyed, they and their children are ok. The school has 400 students and plenty of faculty. They are living on the athletic fields. I will post updates if I get any. He said that Taipei had more and worse aftershocks than they did but he also said that they have no communication and noone is giving them info so I personally do not trust that info. We are praying and thanking God that they are ok.
