Just checked http://www.chinatimes.com.tw/ at around 18:00 Taipei time.

The death toll has reached 1198. Nantou County is the hardest-hit area
with 475 deaths, 119 people missing, 1036 people injured, and 275
people waiting to be rescued. About 1000 houses collapsed. The damage
will increase because Jenai and Hsinyi Shiang had their communication
to the outside world totally disconnected.

(Hsinyi Shiang is larger than Taipei City in land area but its
population is sparsely distributed)

Puli Town of Nantou County has 114 deaths and 112 people missing.

Taichung City reports about 100 deaths with 70-80 people buried.
Takeng area is still the hardest-hit as Takeng is close to the hilly
district in Taichung. The coastal towns of Taichung County suffer only
minor damages.

Yuenlin Town is the hard-hit district for Changhua County.

I taught English at the Hoping East Road branch of the Hess Language School in Taipei from 1992-94. I sincerely hope the teachers, office workers and old and current students are all OK. Would greatly appreciate any info.

Chung Li area is OK. Only the power is out. I've seen no signs of damage to buildings or streets. Thanks be to God.
