CURRENT SITUATION:

Containment goals were reached on 11 large fires in six geographic areas. Five new large fires were reported in the Eastern Great Basin, Western Great Basin and Southwest Areas. Numerous lightning-caused new starts were reported in the Northwest Area until late in the evening. Initial attack activity elsewhere was light to moderate. Lightning activity is forecast to decrease today, but gusty winds will challenge containment efforts in the Rocky Mountain states. A team from the National Interagency Fire Center is traveling to Ft. Hood, Texas to begin training the Army's 20th Engineers Battalion, commanded by LTC Shumway. The battalion will deploy to Missoula on 8/13. Arriving in Boise today will be 79 firefighters from Australia and New Zealand. They will attend briefings and training tomorrow and may be dispatched to fires as early as 8/13.

I am a 5 year member of the west babylon fire dept in New York. I was wondering how to either help with the fires out west or become a forest firefighter. Thanks

Best wishes and good luck to those persons working on the evacuations in the Bitterroot Vallery. If you meet Rick Hufford of Challis - remind him to call home. His wife, and the other ARC members need to know he is OK.

My hat's off to all of the brave firefighters from around the world.
One question though; instead of the active duty marines and army personnel, why are we not using the National Guard personnel? Is not their real purpose to be called during disasters, etc.?

National Guard has been on duty for some days on jobs like manning road blocks, communications, refueling etc. To date I have not heard a word in the national press about their very real contribution to the fire effort. A sad omission.

My son who is 19 has been wanting to work on a fire crew. We haven't found where or who to talk to. If someone could let us know where to apply we would apprecate it. We are located in Boise ID.

Anyone in the Trail Creek Fire area of Idaho, if you have contact with the crews and come across a young man named Greg Amorelli, tell him his mom and dad send their love and we are so proud of what he's doing.
