Writing from St. Thomas, right now it is sunny but slightly overcast. This afternoon is suppose to bring lots of rain. Will write again if weather starts to deteriorate.

Residents in the Virgin Islands are afraid that Debby will be another Marilyn. They are saying that Marilyn was also relatively weak and then built up strenght before hammering into the islands. Residents are buying supplies and securing property. The weather is still calm, no rain, no winds, a litlle overcast. I haven't heard anything from other islands.

I haven't heard anything about Debby hitting the US mainland, although forcasters are not certain. Debby is several days away from the US, leaving a lot of room for change in direction and strenght. You should keep an eye on it if you have interest in Florida. I live in St. Thomas, just came from swimming at Magens Bay. The water was not as calm as usual, but was not rough either. All the boats except 1 were out of the water. The weather is overcast. The wind is calm with a few big gust. No rain. Many residents are boarding up their homes. Others are waiting till morning to see what the next forcast will say. I will keep posting.

Here in Barbados we have been getting welcomed intermittent showers from feeder bands, especially in the north of the island. There were many showers.

In St. Kitts/Nevis there are hundreds of people attending CARIFESTA which is a regional festival of creative arts. Some government ministers of culture from various Caribbean islands are there and the latest word before the storm hit was that they are well protected and safe. This is the second consecutive year that CARIFESTA in St. Kitts was disrupted by a cyclone.

In Antigua, word there is that long lines at the supermarket, gas stations, and stores. hammers were still pounding away close to nightfall as Antiguans prepared for the worse after learning that Debby could be hurricane strength as she is passing the island.

In St. Maarten businesses except for hardware and supermarkets closed at 3PM. curfew there at midnight.everyone here prepared..maybe over prepared if there is such a thing. People gassed up and bought so much food it looked like they would be holed up for weeks. everyone ..including me..has boarded up. we have been burnt so many times..we take every storm seriously now. From: St. Thomas, USVI

The Coast Guard has closed the port of St. Thomas effective 8:00 am tomorrow am as hurricane warnings have been posted. This means there will be no cruise ship visits here until this coming Sunday at least. Debby has increased her forward speed and is on a more westerly heading and the eye is projected, at this time, to pass just south of St. Croix. This means however, the northern qaudrants will affect all of the Virgin Islands. With her intensity also picking up, this will not be a pretty picture. The winds will be higher over the mountainous areas (where I live!. I will be home today by 3:00 pm to finish my preparations. The only good thing about her forward speed is she'll be gone in a hurry instead of traveling 10 mph and pounding us as she goes by. Traffic is heavy. I observed long lines at the gas stations and the supermarkets. I was at the lumber yard at 7:15 am and not much concern was shown then. But it is now. Curfew will be in effect, probably by 12:00 pm. Then, it's a waiting game. (David McDermott" bigdave17@hotmail.com)

From: Puerto Rico

Debby has slowed down from 22mph to 19mph, presently located at lat. 17.2 north & long. 61.0 west. Tropical storm winds extend outward up to 175 miles to the north of it's center.

Debby is located approximately 50 miles east of the island of Antigua. Moving west northwest over the northern Leeward Islands.

Here in Ciales, Puerto Rico we are starting to feel a cool breeze from the north east and we have had a few scattered rain showers, nothing significant at this time.

🙂

Hi from Antigua,

Debby sneaked by last night to the north of us (between Antigua & Barbuda) with no significant rain or wind in my area. I am not sure what happened to Barbuda as the radio stations here have no information :-(.

I think lots of us are confused as to whether or not we should report to work. I guess I will be. I will keep you posted.

It is 10:00 on Tuesday morning in St. Maarten and the skies are clearing and the wind is dying down. There has been minimal damage on St. Maarten...mostly to trees and plants.. no major damage reported. seas are calming down. Electricity is restored in most areas
curfew to be lifted shortly so we can all go out and check out the place
But Debby did not harm us. We lucked out this time!
