I just talked to friends at the Atlantis Hotel and Sun International on Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas (11:15 EST). They are reporting 90 - 100 mph gusts, all guests at Atlantis have been moved out of their rooms to the convention centre to weather the storm. I was suprised the phones were still working. Atlantis is the newest major structure in Nassau and built to the new Florida Building code - there has already been some roof damage and leaks.
Best of luck to everyone affected.

I think that Kim has already told you that we are well, having survived the
first onslaught of hurricane FLOYD.
Floyd has now veered and is moving in a somewhat more northERLY direction.
This means that the EYE of the hurricane is no longer expected to pass close
to Nassau.
With modern satellite imaging, we are able to watch Floyd move over the
surface of our planet. Last time I looked, the eye was slightly offshore
near ELEUTHERA island, in the vicinity of Governor's Harbour and James
Cistern.
A "tip of the hat" to BEC and Batelco. We still have electricity and phones.
As a result, I can use the internet. We woke up to downloading 16 messages
from well-wishes across the web, and are grateful for everyone's prayers and
thoughts.
We let the 3 dogs out around 7 am and they seemed so happy out there that
Kim, Pauli, Scott and I had a good look around, too.
Our BIG satellite dish has suffered some damage, but the system is still
working well.
What was a big tree (outside Kim's study) is now a small tree. Most of it is
lying on the ground. Two smaller trees are at rakish angles. The Bimini top
on out boat is hardly "on" any more. It is shredded.
The hundreds of coconuts are clinging to their trees as the trees wave
wildly in the breeze. How strong is the breeze? The satellite image shows
Nassau as being on the extreme edge of the hurricane-force winds - maybe 75.
It will be interesting to learn the official figure, but I won't bother the
weathermen by phoning.
SOME of the "mission" tiles on our roof have fallen off. I hope not too
many. Even it were all of them, we are still blessed. There must be
thousands of people in the Out islands who have suffered far more.
Our prayers are for those less fortunate than ourselves. Those who have been
hit - and those who still might, whether in the Bahamas or places like North
Carolina.
I have often felt that one of the best investments we made when we built our
home was to install electrically-operated hurricane shutters. With the push
of a button (several buttons) the openings in our home were sealed, thereby
minimizing the work-load in preparation.
We left our bedroom shutter open and the outdoor lights on so we could SEE
what was going on. Paul and Scott elected to sleep with us. The we woke up
to find that we had actually forgotten to close the shutter in the next
room.
KIM, SCOTT AND young PAUL join in saying "THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT".
