Chechenyonok,
The reason you haven't heard any 'brave mujahideen' stories lately is because they are nearly wiped out. LOL.
Unfortunately the Russians still have an army - a poorly trained and equipped one - but nonetheless one, which can do battle that is able to inflict heavy losses upon any enemy. Due to their sheer sizeable advantage they are able to withstand much more severe setbacks than what the rebels ever could.
We have seen the best days of the resistance and now can only look forward to small ambushes that will rarely make the evening news.
The Chechnyans have done much more than was/is expected of them. Don't forget that at the height of their power they numbered a mere 5,000 only!!! Albeit 5,000 consisting of the fiercest and highest quality of Urban warfare fighters. Them holding out against such odds and indeed inflicting major military damage upon a superior army were just short of a miracle.
If anything this conflict should make it clear to the Russians just how far they would have to get to match up against an actual army with an airforce, mechanized units and Navy. (not to mention a Marine Corps) …
TO MS. ARX...12:52 pm post
yeah, cool by me, anyhoo...

From a Russian point of view, summed up in one line.....??????????????????????
"If we can't control a little part of our country like Chechnya, how will we fix anything else?" asked truck driver Rodion Bogomolov."

Igor, if I were to put my foot anywhere, it would be....but no there's no point in talking like that.It won't do anything to convince you to listen to my of point.
There are several things in that article, I would
disagree with.
1) Where is the proof of government conivance in the march. Other than they are afraid to tackle something that is clearly getting out of control.
They prevented a counter demonstration- maybe they thought that was sensible. I'm not saying I'm right and the article is wrong- there is simply no proof in the article one way or another.
2) There are right wing demonstrations in other European countries. Even in Britain the National front cannot be prevented from marching unless there is cause to think this will cause violence.
Freedom of speech is a two edged sword.
Having said that, I do agree the situation is getting out of hand. The Putin doctrine seems in this case as in others to precipitate crisis in order to bring about change. Of course in the short term this will mean more rightwing extremism in response to what the Latvians may see as interference by a not-so-old enemy. Hard to say if this will help the Russian minority.
In the larger scale of things this is still however a pretext for Putin to get what he wants.
Preventing Nato and EU expansion- which is ironic as by joining those organisations, Latvia would have to undertake to protect its minorities!!!
If Latvia remains outside Nato, who is there to prevent this opression from continuing, apart from the Russian Army, that is?
"The great masses of people will more easily fall victims to a big lie
than to a small one."
Defending the indefensable you need big lies. It still amazes me, what people will believe, but both Nato and the Serbs are guilty as charged.
Proving one to be lying or exagerating, doesn't make the other more truthful!
