No, attempt to occupy Serbia is of strategic importance for Americans in millitary sense. If they succeeded, Serbs would be in NATO, fighting against Russia. In Serbia there would be nuclear weapon directed towards Moscow and Minsk. In this case, Russians would have to do the same. And this is the scenario for Americans to destroy us not weakening their own economy. The goal is Sibir with gas, minerals etc, Caucaus with oil, and of course to deter every possibility for any other country to become rival of America.

Some fun. Just got an NTV newscast, where they interviewed M. Magomedov, a camera operator, that took an amateur footage during the previous campaign. He complained about a video hoax, stating that, some of his footage circulating on-screen actually relates to the previous conflict, namely Argun not Alkhan-Yurt. The west must realize that -
(1) No matter how harsh the US criticizes Russia and denounces Russia, Russia's operations in Chechnya will go on unabated until Russia decides what it wants to do in Chechnya. So the US cannot dramatically change the Russian operations on the ground in Chechnya, period.

(2) Stopping IMF loans etc etc to Russia will merely backfire on the US - Russia will become more unstable, more dangerous and have even lower threshold for using nukes - up to US if it wants that. Most of the US money aid to Russia is used for dismantling Russian nukes under the Start 1 treaty, so stopping that money - Russia does not dismantle those nukes, hence has more nukes.

(3) The US underestimates the seriousness of the Chechen threat to Russian security, especially when Chechnya invaded Dagestan twice. Such a major security threat requires a major military operation even if the costs involve many civilians who happen to be in the way.

(4) Hence, the US and West gain NOTHING by continuing harsh criticism of Russia and or other measures. In fact it is detrimental to US/Western interests to do this. They can gain something if they constructively help Russia to improve it's security in Chechnya by eliminating the rebels while protecting civilians - e.g. provide intelligence information, food aid to Chechen refugees etc.

(5) Nuclear war can be VERY real. So far we've not had it, but it does NOT mean it's something that can never happen. Maybe this nuclear war will inevitably happen because of persistent human stupidity. The West has to for once demonstrate a non agressive, non dictating, constructive approach else it's game over for the whole world (we probably deserve game over already from how stupidly things have been done in the past).
