Gorbachev Says Moscow To Blame For Chechen War

ATHENS, Georgia, Dec 4, 1999 -- (Reuters) Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev sharply criticized Russia's leadership on Friday for failing to work out a political solution to the crisis in the breakaway republic of Chechnya.

"As a result of a lack of principled and prudent policy, we see a situation in which Chechnya has become a kind of black hole," Gorbachev told reporters and students during a press conference at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Gorbachev said he warned Russian President Boris Yeltsin in 1994 that any attempt to impose an ultimatum or hard line on Chechen separatists would end in a "real bloodbath" and a protracted war in the Caucasus.

Tens of thousands of people were slaughtered in Chechnya between 1994 and 1996 when Russian troops fought a losing war against separatist rebels. Chechnya declared independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991.

Moscow renewed its military campaign several months ago when it began bombing Chechen towns and sent nearly 100,000 troops into the region to battle what it described as "international terrorists."

Although harshly criticized in the West, the war is widely supported by the Russian public, which blames Chechen extremists for a series of terrorist attacks in Moscow and other parts of Russia.

Gorbachev, who was in Athens to speak about environmental issues, said the West should have been more vocal in opposing Russia's first campaign in Chechnya.

Thursday 02 December 1999 Mujahideen Shoot Down Another Russian Helicopter Gunship

Fighting continues near the city of Alkhai-Yort on the outskirts of Gudermes. Praise be to Allah that the Mujahideen are scoring victory upon victory in these battles. They destroyed four Russian military fighting vehicles together with their occupants, and they shot down a Russian helicopter gunship.

After several futile attempts by the Russian forces to enter the capital, they have begun to advance upon the open plains near the Main Road that leads to the centre of the capital. From there they want to try to launch their offensive of the capital. We ask Allah to repel them on their heels in defeat.

Amongst the evidences indicating the weakness of the Russian forces in the battlefield is that they have begun to use traitor Chechen forces against the Mujahideen. Praise be to Allah, the Mujahideen surrounded a large number of these soldiers in the city of Gekhi. The Mujahideen wanted to take them as prisoners. However, the Russian forces assisted and incited them not to give up without a fight, so a fierce battle ensued, lasting all of Wednesday night. Praise be to Allah that not a single Mujahid was killed. Losses amongst the enemy ranks remain unknown until now.
