How "Russian is the Russian Mafia"
Hardly a day goes by without news reports involving the "Russian Mafia." Yet few Americans realize that there are practically NO ETHNIC RUSSIANS among criminals who make up this mysterious "Russian Mafia" -- a relatively new phenomenon that evolved during the past two decades, after a massive immigration from the Soviet Union, and particularly after the "Perestroika" and economic reforms began.

This term is particularly offensive to around three millions of Russian-Americans (according to the 1990 census) who, during the last two centuries amassed an enviable record of outstanding contributions to the U.S. arts, science and engineering, literature and humanities, choreography and music (see Hall of Fame).

Below we offer a few facts on why the "Russian Mafia" is anything but "Russian" at all and why, to reflect its true nature and origins, it should be termed the "Red Mafia."

The Beginning

In the early 70s, in response to the U.S. pressure, the Soviet Union, for the first time in its brutal history, opened its borders. From the beginning, it was letting out only certain rigidly defined ethnic and religious groups: Jews (about 90% of the total), some Germans and Armenians, and Pentecostal Ukrainians.

Starting as a trickle, this immigration soon grew to around 50,000 annually. But there were practically no ethnic Russians among these immigrants. Then, as now, there was no quota for ethnic Russians. Upon their arrival in the U.S. they were soon labeled as "Russians," regardless of whether or not they came from the Russian Federation or any other Soviet republic. Since the term "Russian" was wrongfully used as a synonym to "Soviet" or "Communist," this miraculous metamorphosis was universally accepted and the label was widely applied. (see chapter titled Was There Ever a Russian Empire.)

Soviet officials, trying to turn their loss into an advantage, used this opportunity to dump as many criminals upon the U.S. as was feasible. As a result, by mid-70s, a new term was coined in the U.S.: the "Russian" Mafia. The FBI would soon begin issuing reports on the numbers of criminals and KGB agents among the immigrants.

The fact that there were very few ethnic Russians within the ranks of this "Russian" Mafia, did not seem to bother anyone. Even at a Senate "Hearing before the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations," Delaware Senator William V. Roth, the Subcommittee's Chairman, justified this misrepresentation in his opening remarks thusly: "When we use the term 'Russian organized crime' in the course of this hearing, we are referring to organized crime from all the republics of the former Soviet Union, not only from the Republic of Russia [sic; the correct name is "The Russian Federation", P. B.]. We realize the limitations of this definition but have chosen to use this phrase because of its widespread recognition and acceptance." (S. Hrg. 104-604, p. 2.)

Why Not the "Red Mafia?"

As the ever widening usage of the term "Russian Mafia" began to inflict moral, economic, and physical damage upon Russian-Americans (some of whom trace their roots in America to the XVIII century), the Congress of Russian-Americans, Inc. ("CRA") countered these ethnic slurs with numerous statements to the media, local, state, and federal officials, as well as to the public at large. Soon after the Senator Roth's Hearing referred to above, the CRA sent Senator Roth a letter suggesting that he consider replacing the term "Russian Mafia" with "Red Mafia."
The CRA feels that since the "Russian" Mafia is the product of the Soviet Communist system and has nothing to do with anything Russian, the term "Red Mafia" would describe the origins of this new organized crime clan without offending or damaging any specific ethnic group or nationality.

I’ve been in Russia. I generally prefer St.Pete to Moscow, and I’ve traveled in between. Kempinski and foreign shops seem to be in line with Europe, including prices. Domestic goods are rather cheap and of low quality, unfortunately. Majority of people lives deep in poverty and worst part is – almost everyone hates corrupt officials and businessmen and everyone dreams to be among them. Western money plainly considered as a Russian state reserve and chauvinism along with scapegoating seem to be the only things that keep Russian society from slipping into chaos.
