According to the latest official information released by Russian Defense Ministry officials, over 11 000 Chechen rebels have been killed since August of 1999. This number includes the 1500 fighters who were killed during the past week, between 500 and 700 of them were killed by aviation and artillery without ever coming into direct contact with federal troops. Between August 2, 1999, and February 18, 2000, federal forces sustained 1503 killed and 4587 wounded. Out of these numbers 1223 killed and 3600 wounded were sustained by federal forces since the beginning of ground operations in Chechnya, Oct. 1, 1999. Since August 2 of last year Russian Defense Ministry troops sustained 970 killed and 2706 wounded, while the Interior Ministry troops sustained 488 killed and 1789 wounded during the same period of time. During the past week federal troops sustained 45 killed (36 -- Defense Ministry, 9 -- Interior Ministry) and 92 wounded (54 -- Defense Ministry, 38 -- Interior Ministry). Since August of 1999 50 federal servicemen (23 -- Defense Ministry) are missing in action.

Again, that Human Rights Watch is the most hypocritical of various orgs. They should do a "perestroyka" into a Human Obligations Watch. Too many hypothetical rights, but ... something to shout about.
