URUS-Martan (outskirts of Grozny). - In the cellar there were two men, but they seemed more like animals than men. To one of them they had cut off half his hand, five fingers. They tortured their captives several times a day and filmed the events with the fervor of true video
aficionados. The muffled laughter of the wahabiis are heard on the sound track of the video the Russian Ministry of the Interior (OMON) seized in a cellar of Urús-Martán after the capitulation of this city, the third most important in Chechnya, in which a slow and dramatic reconstruction has begun.
When fleeing towards the mountains, the fundamentalists took their hostages with them "in chains", according to eyewitnesses interviewed by this newspaper. The Russian liberation of Urús-Martán has served, at the very least, to dismantle the bases of the main chechen organized crime gangs, engaged in a massive kidnapping industry without precedent in the world.
"They decapitated several of their hostages with a chainsaw before fleeing. The heads of other men we found nailed to lampposts where birds had begun eating them. Some were of Russian soldiers who had been taken prisoner ", as related to El Mundo by Andrei, an official at one of the newly established command posts.
Amongst the kidnapping victims, there are numerous women and children, like Alla Geifman, a 12 year old Russian girl of Jewish origin tortured over a period of seven months and mutilated - they cut off two of her fingers and sent the video to her father via one of her torturers. They demanded five million dollars (around 825 million pesetas) for her life.
In all the Caucasus, there are 1,000 kidnapped and 1,700 missing persons, most in Chechnya and its neighbor Ingushetia. The people of Urús-Martán relate that some powerful taip (chechen clans) wage war in parallel against the wahabiis that have kidnapped and assassinated members of the rival clans. It is the implacable revenge of chechen blood.
The Russian military in the region draws a clear dividing line between the wahabii Islamic combatants, hated by the chechen civil populace - as this newspaper has been able to confirm, and guerrillas who fight for independence. Urús-Martán was one of the bastions of the Islamic radicals and a squalid prison of several hundred hostages - more than 500, according to the Russian intelligence service -, a criminal industry that has made an independent
Chechen republic a non-viable option , submerging it instead into a land of total chaos.

I am Muslim by birth. However, it is hard to tell since none of my rhetoric spews even an ounce of religious content. I can't wait until the fundamentalists on this board begin calling me a traitor.

I will tell you whats wrong, torture is unacceptable in what we would like to think is a some what civilized world. As far as being an American watching you guys go at it like this on this board you come off looking silly. Besides violence just causes more violence. What do you think the Russians are going to do when they come accross their budies heads on sticks. Probably do some of the same things themselves. In this war it looks like no one can take the higher moral ground. Maybe one side should try.
