I think what really going on is this: Putin "unofficially" agreed with Maskhadov on cease-fire to let terrorists to leave Grozny. Top commanders didn't like it of course. And were replaced in the nicest way possible. Top commanders wanted to take Grozny by force, which would mean casualties and nasty spot on Putin's resume. So Putin allowed bandits to leave Grozny, that's why they are appearing all over the place, Argun, Shali, etc. Why Putin did this? So Grozny can be taken with no or very little casualties. But what about bandits you say? Well, it's a lot easier to bomb them in the mountains than out of Soviet era bunkers in Grozny. Plus the terrorists will lose many men before they even reach mountains.

From Cossack to Ultra Communist:

“By Ultra Russian Nationalist ( - 205.188.196.57) on Sunday, January 9, 2000 - 07:36 pm: turk, yes i agree. In my opinion, if communists want to win, chechen war must fail for the russians so putin will lookback. Most desirable choice would be then is Zyuganov.”

You communists will never change - your idol Lenin use to cooperate with Russia’s worst enemies(Japan, German Empire and Austro-Hungarian empire) and worked against war effort of Russian Army. You, communists, should never use word “Russia” or “Russian”.
Real Russians were dying in the East Prussia and Glacier, while all your Lenin’s, Brownstones, Radices and Co. were drinking beer in bars from Geneva to New-York, cheering to every news about losses of Russian Army. My grandfather told me stories about Red Army POW during Civil War:
A. International elitists who hated everything about Russian traditions, history and religion.
B. Uneducated scum, who wanted to plunder their neighbors.
C. Uneducated scum, who fanatically believed in economic nonsense called Marxism.

My question to you: “ Are you A, B, or C?”

"Turk and what do you propose when someone exports revolution, just let them do it."

Igor,
I don't want to sound like a guy with all the answers, but don't you think that a terrorist for someone, is a freedom fighter for others. Forget about Chechnia, think of Northern Ireland. IRA is supported by Catholics, yet they are terrorist as far as Protestants are concerned. What British understood early on is that, if you harass whole population to eliminate terrorist, then you inflame the problem, helping "so called" terrorist organisations to recruit even more people. That is the reason they changed their tactic, and stopped confronting average people.

What ruling class of Russia is doing is a rape and pillage of whole Chechnia, and no wonder people are keep fighting.

It never cease to amaze me to see the contries can find billions of dollars to fight, but can not spare a few hundred miliion dollars to improve people's lives, so that people can become content and reasons to rebel are eliminated.

Doesn't matter what a person's religion or ethnic background is, everyone wants peace and security, food on the table, and a decent shelter to live in.

To Turk & Co.,
Okay, freedom to steal people for ransom should be protected then.

To Rudssians,
Hey Russians, get out of Chechnya! Let 'em continue to kidnap and rob you! Do it just to keep Brits happy!

Turk>>> First of all, anyone who considers terrorists in Chechnya "freedom fighters", they need to get professional help. Notice I said terrorists in Chechnya not Chechens.
Second, people of Chechnya are not fighting against Russian troops. Not unless they are forces by bandits that is. Only brainwashed youth supports terrorists.
Third, war in Chechnya actually helps Russian economy. Thousands of new jobs are created -- to rebuild roads, buildings, pipelines. Teachers, administration, drivers. Heck, even mercenaries. And the list goes on and on.

Why not? Militant Islam and communists are nice topics. We can discuss it for years. It is not like war which will be over with a fall of Grozny.

I knew it all alone. The war is the best way to fight corruption inside and rebuild the economy. USA fully recovered from Great Depression only when war started. It is the best for Russia to fight at this moment.

Armenian+,

Where did you get the idea that I condoned "stealing of people for ransom". Don't tell me that nobody was kidnapped in Armenia. This is a matter of law and order issue. Even wealthy countries with extensive welfare networks has a crime problem. Why should I be surprised to see so much crime in Chechnia where 95% of the population is unemployed.

Don't try to stir others against me, others are smart enough to see what you are attempting. Let's try to keep a reasonable communication.

To Bosna,
everybody knows that the Bosnia and Albania is nothing but repulsive puke on the clean table of gorgeous Europe. After we finish in Chechnya, we and Serbs will be back to take care of this problem.

To Turk. Okay.
It does not change the fact that kidnapping for ransom was industrialized in Chechnia. I don't believe it was same way in Ireland.
