FYI, the ethnic Russian population of Grozny prior to 1991 made up more than 50%.

can anyone tell us what is going on in chechnya right now?? I thought the russian army has a full and tight control of grozny with 100,000 men; and now we hear that the 2000 chechens broke thru the siege and ACTUALLY entered three towns miles away from grozny!!!!!
what is worse, the russians generals, in the latest report from AP, are concerned how to keep 100,000 safe from the 2000 chechens.... what is THAT, igor???

Do you have any information on ethnic cleansing of Russians in Chechnia? The reason I'm asking that is due to western media mentioning remarkable good relations between ethnic Russians and Chechens. As I understand during the 94-96 war ethnic Russians did not support the invading Russian Army, thereby not causing any strain in the relationship among average people.

After the first war, I understand that not only Russians but also Chechens left Chechnia due to poor living conditions. Remember Russian Army did a lot of destruction during the war.

This move was resisted mainly by wide segments of the local population -- both Chechen and Slav (Russian, Ukrainian, etc.) -- that opted for continued relations with Russia. Tensions escalated into the use of force. By June 1993, what began as a series of skirmishes transformed into a full blown war between Dudayev's supporters and enemies. Provocations, special and covert operations by Russian forces, did not contribute to stability or conflict resolution. Heavy street fighting took place in Grozny during the summer of 1993.
