Anti-Cehchen war rally in Istanbul


Several thousand Turks have gathered in the central square of Istanbul to protest against the Russian offensive in Chechnya.

The demonstration was organised by Islamist groups.

The protestors waved Chechen flags and shouted anti-Russian slogans and accused the Turkish government of failing to take a stand against the Russian campaign.

Correspondents say there is some sympathy for Chechen rebels in Turkey, which has historic and cultural ties to many peoples in the Caucasus but the government has adopted a cautious approach to the conflict for fear that Moscow could retaliate by supporting Kurdish insurgents.

AN X-ray scanner that shows airport customs officers the naked bodies of passengers has been greeted with outrage by American civil liberties watchdogs.

The BodySearch machine has been in place in New
York and five other American cities for several months. Security officers can look at pictures of the human body in outline regardless of how much clothing passengers are wearing.

According to a spokesman for the manufacturers, the images of the body are not clear, although genitals and breasts are clearly distinguishable.
