NAZRAN, Russia (June 30, 2000 4:24 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com ) - A top Russian general on Friday said troops had wiped out a band of Chechen rebels after a five-day firefight in the southern mountains, while another shootout reportedly broke out in Chechnya's capital, Grozny.

Russian Gen. Gennady Troshev said the fighting near the southern town of Serzhen-Yurt was over, and that the rebel band had been "annihilated."

The fighting underscored that Chechnya remains restive, despite repeated Russian claims that the nine-month war is over.

As that battle wound down, clashes erupted Friday in a forest just south of Grozny after soldiers discovered rebels preparing an ambush, the Interfax news agency reported.

Boxed in by forests on both sides of a highway, the ambushed troops opened fire at the trees with grenade launchers and heavy-caliber machine guns, but were unsure if they hit any rebels, the report said, citing an Interfax correspondent at the scene.

Meanwhile, about 21 miles to the south, Russian soldiers began searching through dense greenery near Serzhen-Yurt, where fighting raged this week.

"A mopping-up operation is under way in the area, and the situation is on the whole under control," Troshev said, according to ITAR-Tass news agency.

Russian television showed dead bodies on the forest floor, which had been pounded for three days by Russian artillery, machine guns, grenades and aerial bombs and rockets.

Presidential spokesman on Chechnya Sergei Yastrzhembsky said Friday that troops had found fresh graves, and "on the ground fragments of the bodies of over 40 fighters were strewn."

Troshev said more than 100 rebels had been killed, but the claim could not be confirmed.

One Russian serviceman was killed Friday and six were wounded in the area when their army truck was ambushed. After a mine explosion, rebels opened fire, according to one soldier who was interviewed by NTV television.

At least 12 Russian soldiers were killed at Serzhen-Yurt earlier this week. Serzhen-Yurt lies at the head of the Vedeno Gorge, a key rebel refuge in the southern mountains.

On a visit to Chechnya on Friday, Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev said the rebel group near Serzhen-Yurt had planned to attack Gudermes, Chechnya's second-largest city, which is used as the administrative seat for a pro-Moscow government.

Islamic leader Akhmad Kadyrov, the Chechen head of the pro-Moscow administration, said Friday he hoped to meet with President Vladimir Putin next week.

"There is a very serious issue that can only be settled at the level of the Russian president, and Vladimir Putin should make a decision on it personally," Kadyrov told journalists in Grozny, according to Interfax. He did not elaborate.

Continued fighting has deterred most refugees from returning, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said Friday in Geneva.

About 170,000 refugees remain in the neighboring republic of Ingushetia, and many are likely to remain through next winter, UNHCR spokesman Ron Redmond said.

Russian troops were driven out of Chechnya in a 1994-96 war with independence fighters. They went back in September, after Chechnya-based Islamic militants raided several villages in the neighboring Russian region of Dagestan, and after about 300 people died in apartment bombings the government blamed on Chechens.
