I made only one trip there and I didn't ask if they like russians or not. In fact they looked so much like russians but even with more russian caracteristic that struck me at the time, that the question didn't even come to my mind. This is only my western feeling. The countries too loked very similar. I like your description of Odessa.

Chorny, asked an interesting question. Why is NATO still arround after the warsaw pact dissbanded? I might have an answer. Even though it does not seem possible at this time in History by having most European nations in one military allance helps in the prevention of a war between two of the nations in the organization. Europe has had its fair share of wars. Another thought by having millitaries intergated makes it that much harder for them to fight each other and keep military secrets from one another. First of all, Igor, is the Nato army pressing at the russian border? Not realy.
If Nato extends to Poland, Lithuania and Bulgaria, it doesn't mean the US army will concentrate its forces at the extreme East of these countries.

It's these countries that knock at Nato's doors and not Nato invading them (as the russians generals are convinced through theyr soviet-era logic).
Why they wish join Nato?
I'm not an analyst but my first thought is that it's for them one step to the west recognition, economy, garantee for investment, a western look,
European Union partnership, we-are-like-you, and so on.

Second: Nato is more likely to spend money in Bulgaria than Bulgaria in the US or Germany. It means inflow of cash. Period.

Privet. You know, it beats the hell out of me too. Russians, Bellorussians, Ukrainians, they ALL look so much alike, you literally CANNOT tell the difference, unless you've studied ethnicities for years. And even then, so many bloods got mixed up by now, that I am sure that many Ukranians have some Russian in them, nowadays.
Why hatred you ask? Well, Western Ukraine residents are very anti-Russian ever since the end of the WWII. I guess they were anti-commies to begin with, and that somehow evolved into a hatred towards Russians.

well put, Why would NATo ever want to invade Russia. It really makes no sence. There would be no public support to do something foolish like that. One might argue to control Russian resources would be a reason for NATO to invade Russia. This seems sliily to me, why have men die just to get resources that can be bought anyway on the open market. Besides the cost of such an invasion would be far more expensive than the value of such resources. Over all I think the Russians have nothing at all to worry about, there is no reason to be paranoid about it.
