WORLD WAR II (by JC, page 37), FHM magazine

Our starry-eyed high school history teachers used to glow as they blathered on about how the US single-handedly trounced the Krauts and all their buddies to win WWII. What they didn't know could fill a text book..

THE CLAIM. If it weren't for the overwhelming heroism and expert planning of American JI Joes, Europe - and eventually the entire world - would have fallen to Axis powers in WWII.

THE TRUTH. With Uncle Sam doing everything he could to keep out of WWII in the first place, Hitler's forces torched and bombed our allies as the US watched from the sidelines. By the time we got in the game following the Pearl Harbor debacle in 1941, the outcome of the war had been decided by the Russian Army.
The America-led Aliied forces' D-day victory in 1944 is heralded as the turning point of the war, but Russia had been begging for such aid since 1941. And despite promices from Churchill and Roosevelt, they'd been left out in the cold (literally) to fend for themselves. Under the iron fist of Stalin, Russian and Ukrainian forces held three-quarters of Hitler's armies at bay for three(!) years, suffering incredible casualties in the process, but also serving to dramatically thin German ranks and exhaust their resources. By the end of the war in 1945, more than 20 millionSoviets had been killed. Not only does that represent a third of the total number of lives lost in WWII, but it was more than 70 times the American casualties. (JC)

Antonio,

must admit, the last article of yours about Tbilisi was interesting indeed. Haven't been in Georgia since late 80's..what you posted though, sounds very much believable.

Russian Media Baron Formally Charged

MOSCOW, Jun 17, 2000 -- (Reuters) Russian investigators formally charged media magnate Vladimir Gusinsky with embezzlement on Friday and said he would not be released from jail, his lawyer Genri Reznik told reporters.

"Vladimir Gusinsky has been charged with large-scale embezzlement under Article 159 of the criminal code of the Russian Federation," Reznik told reporters gathered outside the Moscow jail where the businessman is being held.

Lawyers had earlier said they expected Gusinsky, the owner of Russia's biggest independent media empire, to be freed on Friday.

On Thursday President Vladimir Putin, on a trip to Germany, had boosted hopes that Gusinsky would soon be released when he said he believed the jailing of Gusinsky was excessive.

But Putin also said he had no influence over the prosecution service, which he said was politically independent.

On Friday, at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Putin said: "I don't think the prosecutor should have taken a step like arrest."

Putin also said Gusinsky should be covered by a recent amnesty for people who had been decorated by the state.

Asked whether he thought Gusinsky might be freed next week, Reznik said: "I have little faith (in that)."

Another lawyer, Pavel Astakhov, told NTV television that investigator Vasily Nikolayev had promised the defense that on Monday he would reconsider its request that Gusinsky be freed.

Reznik repeated his charge that Gusinsky's detention was politically motivated and aimed against his company Media-MOST, which includes NTV, Ekho Moskvy radio and two liberal newspapers.

"The essence of the charge means that Media-Most has been created with the criminal aim of causing damage to the (Russian) state," Reznik said.

The arrest of Gusinsky, who is being held in an aging, overcrowded Moscow jail, has stirred fears among many Russian liberals and journalists of a clampdown on freedom of the press.

The case has also sparked concern among Western governments and human rights groups about the plight of Gusinsky, who is also the head of the Russian Jewish Congress.

Lawyers have said the detention has no legal foundation because Gusinsky held a state decoration which, under the terms of a parliamentary amnesty agreed earlier this year, would exempt him from staying behind bars.

However, to be freed, Gusinsky would have to admit guilt to the accusations brought against him
