Mr Raduyev, the son-in-law of the late Chechen president Jokhar Dudayev, was captured by a special unit of the FSB security service in the village of Novogroznensky, despite having 100 bodyguards, the head of the FSB said yesterday.

The warlord is considered a dangerous maverick in Chechnya even when compared with other Chechen field commanders. He has survived at least four assassination attempts and was badly wounded in the head in 1996. "He is crazy," said one specialist on Chechnya yesterday, who denied the capture of Mr Raduyev had any military significance. He is, however, the first Chechen leader who is well known to be seized by Russian forces.

He is being held at Lefortovo prison in Moscow and his interrogation is to be broadcast on Russian television. Mr Putin said that Mr Raduyev had confessed to trying to assassinate Eduard Shevardnadze, the President of Georgia. "The investigation and the court will determine if it was bluff or if it is really so," he said.
