Chechen ambush kills 37 Russians, sparks resistance fears
MOSCOW, March 3 (AFP) -
Moscow said Friday it lost 37 elite paramilitary police in an ambush near Grozny as Chechen rebels delivered a striking reminder to Russia that its victory declarations were premature.
The fierce Chechen counter-attack came as Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov came under renewed international pressure in Lisbon to halt the operation and allow monitors into the war zone to check on reports of warcrimes.
Enjoy!!
...But I think the most likely explanation of all is his brain is simply three sizes too small..
Wotzamatta, Bacon, won't anyone play with you?
Don't worry any one new will soon work out that you need soooooo much more attention, than we can give you!
Balalaika, I admire your tenacity! Why do you post half english, half cyrillic?

Chechen ambush kills 37 Russians, sparks resistance fears
MOSCOW, March 3 (AFP) -
Moscow said Friday it lost 37 elite paramilitary police in an ambush near Grozny as Chechen rebels delivered a striking reminder to Russia that its
victory declarations were premature.
The fierce Chechen counter-attack came as Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov came under renewed international pressure in Lisbon to halt the operation and
allow monitors into the war zone to check on reports of warcrimes.
A Russian convoy composed of nine trucks was carrying 98 interior ministry troops was travelling on the northwestern outskirts of Grozny when it
suddenly came under Chechen fire.
Sergei Kucherok, the chief-of-staff of the Russian command in Chechnya, told ITAR-TASS that 12 soldiers died on the scene of battle while another 25
perished from their wounds in a Grozny hospital.
At least a dozen more servicemen were reported hurt.
The rebel Internet information site claimed that 60 Russians had been killed.
"This is a dark day in police history," Interior Minister Vladimir Rushailo said in televised remarks from Minsk.
"This tells us that the situation really is difficult, and that our conduct of the counter-terrorist operation does not always end in success," he said.
"Of course, we will demand explanations from officials who are in charge of guaranteeing the convoy's safe transport."
The district had been reported cleared of all insurgents last month and the news struck a nerve in a Russian media which searched for official
explanations as to how such a deadly raid could take place.
The military on Thursday had vowed that the last of the Chechen resistance would be eliminated within a week.
The private NTV television station reporting from Grozny said the five-hour battle started when Chechens attacked the convoy at 10:30 a.m.
Reports said the Chechens used rocket-launchers to disable the first and last vehicles in the convoy, leaving the others stranded in between.
"We never expected such a strong attack in the Grozny area," Mikhail Simashkin, one of the policemen, said on television from the hospital.
"They were shooting from everywhere, we tried to protect ourselves until help came."
The death toll continues to mount in the five-month offensive ahead of the March 26 presidential poll, despite confident Kremlin noises on the war's
outcome.
Military sources cited by Interfax said 70 Russians had been killed and 200 wounded over the past week alone -- in stark contrast with official reports of
low single-digit daily casualties.
Analysts had predicted that the Chechens would switch to guerrilla tactics similar to those led in the 1994-96 war once their last mountain stronghold in
Shatoi fell on Monday.
One source said Thursday's attack meant that Russian soldiers would now treat civilians in Chechnya with even greater mistrust.
"The bold attack on the riot police unit in the Grozny area confirms reports that numerous militants are passing themselves off as peaceful civilians in
villages," a source in the federal headquarters told Interfax.
He said so-called "mopping-up" operations, in which Chechens are checked for proper registration documents and men are often arrested on the slightest
suspicion of working for the resistance, would be stepped up.
The Chechen ambush is particularly unsettling for Moscow since it came only one day after acting President Vladimir Putin slapped down an offer for
peace talks from Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov.
Putin, whose popularity has soared largely in response to his tough handling of the Chechen campaign, said Maskhadov should only talk to Moscow
prosecutors because he is wanted as a war criminal.
The Chechen leader in response remarked that Moscow should in that case prepare for a long battle.
Meanwhile with Foreign Minister Ivanov under pressure from US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and EU ministers in Lisbon, Moscow
announced that the Kremlin would hand-pick a group of 20 Chechens to monitor human rights in rebel republic.
Vladimir Kalamanov, Putin's representative on Chechen human rights, added that two Council of Europe observers would travel to the breakaway
republic in the next two weeks.

Igor,
Privet..per your Q - I like US policy on terrorrists because of their tough policy on negotiations..they do not give up to terrorist's demands, make it tough on'em and at the same time, put terrorists in the no-win position, so it doesn't make sence to kill hostages. No cherry for the terrorrists, so to speak..lol.
l'menexe,
You go too far in your fantasies. Do not let your anger affect your judgement about others.

Di,
The point is that Russia has been a looser, is a looser, and will be a looser, and Chechens demonstrated this again.
And they did so on the vary next day after Russian generals annonced the victory they took over over Shatoi, and reported the victory to Prez Putin. So we are just "enjoying" the extend of Russian victory, which increasingly looks like a lot of trouble to Russia that did not learn lessons of the first Chechen war (let alone Afgan war).
ore: """Just yesterday we heard from Russians that the war would be over in a week....""""
kimi: who did you hear it from? Please refer me to that post, OK?
So, for your reference, just because today i am in good mood, being proud of russia and its VODKA ARMY.
So this is what Koshman said the other day:
Vice Premier Nikolai Koshman told Austrian state television late Tuesday that ``all combat operations will be over in 10 days to two weeks,'' and certainly before Russian presidential elections at the end of March.
Oh, "all combat operations" and "CERTAINLY", of course, to the great upset of all these Russia-bashers....
