One more independent source (Russian "Military News Agency") claims that on March 1 as many as 86 Russians were killed in a fierce fight in Argun gorge. So far Russians admitted only 31 deaths.

Russians admit big losses in Chechen gorge

Almost an entire company of elite Russian paratroops was wiped out in a dawn ambush by guerrillas in the southern highlands of Chechnya, according to reports which reached the Russian capital yesterday.

In the latest embarrassing setback for Moscow, which claims that it has won(!!!) the war, the reports yesterday from the north-western Russian town of Pskov - home to the elite 76th airborne guards division - said that between 60 and 80 paratroops were killed in fighting in the Argun gorge.


Even in the destroyed Chechen capital Grozny, rebel snipers hiding in the ruins continue to kill Russians.

Russia's acting president, Vladimir Putin, claimed on Sunday that the guerrillas were no longer able to mount any resistance. "There is no guerrilla war on Chechen territory," the defence minster, Igor Sergeyev, declared.

The declarations of victory appear lamentably premature as the rebels launch their long-threatened partisan war.

Richard Norton-Taylor adds: Russian troops are supplying Chechen fighters with ammunition in exchange for money or household goods, Ilyas Akhmadov, the foreign minister in Chechnya's rebel government, said yesterday.

"As long as there are Russians in Chechnya, we will have no problem getting weapons," he claimed. "Russian military garrisons are in touch with Chechens." The rebels were also getting aid from other regions in the Russian federation, and were receiving money from "purely private sources", including Islamic communities in Turkey.

Mr Akhmadov is visiting Britain to drum up support for the Chechen cause. He is due to see foreign office officials later this week.

He dismissed Moscow's claims that its troops were in control in Chechnya. "Russians are like a wild boar bitten by lots of dogs [that] does not know how to attack," he said. He estimated that 4,000 Rusian soldiers had been killed since January, and up to 2,000 rebel fighters and 25,000 civilians.
