FED COMMAND BLAMED FOR SLAUGHTER IN CHECHEN ARGUN GORGE

KHANKALA, March 7 (AVN) - All bodies of the federal airborne troopers who were killed in the Ulus-Kert vicinity in southern Chechnya overnight to March 1 are airlifted for identification to the southern Russian town of Rostov, a source in the unified federal headquarters told the Military News Agency. Almost one third of the 86 deceased were born in the Pskov region in northewestern European Russia, the source said. Their funerals are scheduled for March 10 to 12.

According to the source, all earlier statements concerning the Ulus-Kert tragedy are nothing more than an attempt to disguise the public which has believed the announced "practical completion of the military phase of the anti-terrorist operation in Chechnya."} Officials of the headquarters blame the tragedy on inertness of eastern federal group commander Major-General Sergei Makarov and airborne group commander Major-General Alexander Lentsov. The fight near Ulus-Kert lasted over four hours, but only a platoon headed by the deputy battalion commander came to rescue the company surrounded by as many as 2,000 guerrillas. It is obvious that these forces were not enough to change the situation.
