Ulrich Ende, N-24 manager, forwarded official apologies to Sergei Krylov, Russian Ambassador to Germany, for a controversial Chechnya footage, Sergei Yastrzhembsky, Russian Acting President assistant, announced to a Russian Information Centre news conference.

Television company reporter Frank Hoefling drastically misinterpreted information to trample on journalistic ethics, and his coverage of Chechen developments "did not serve the cause of the truth", acknowledges Mr. Ende as he pledges that the company will further on provide more reliable facts.

Russian forces in Chechnya intend to completely eliminate the remaining Chechen rebels. There is no information of any negotiations going on between Russian commanders and Chechen rebel leaders. Most Russian generals were against the extension of the amnesty law requested by Russia's Defense Minister and by Vladimir Putin. Since the amnesty law was extended by the Russian parliament, federal troops in Chechnya became more aggressive and are directing all their efforts at complete elimination of the remaining rebel forces. Russian troops are not inclined to take any prisoners, who who are likely to go free several weeks later because of the overly generous amnesty law.

Russia admits heavy losses, defiant Chechens hold Komsomolskoye
NEAR KOMSOMOLSKOYE, Russia, March 9 (AFP) -
Russia admitted Thursday to heavy losses in recent battles with Chechen guerrillas as hundreds of rebels held off federal troops outside the key southern Chechnya town of Komsomolskoye.

Major General Nikolai Burbuiga acknowledged that 84 paratroopers died in four days of running clashes last week near Ulus-Kert, some 40 kilometresmiles) southeast of Grozny, nearly three times more than previously admitted.

He said only one member of the unit survived the February 29-March 3 battle, adding that the unit had been outnumbered by Chechen fighters 20 to one, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

"The members of the units which took part in combat showed mass heroism, sang-froid and devotion to duty," he said.

Sergei Yastrzhembsky, the Kremlin's spokesman on Chechnya, admitted Tuesday that the rebels had inflicted "heavy" casualties and that a previous toll of 31 dead was too low.

Russian officials are sensitive to reports of battlefield losses, mindful that acting President Vladimir Putin's handling of the Chechen campaign has made him odds-on favourite to win March 26 presidential elections.

Hundreds of Chechen fighters meantime battled federal troops outside Komsomolskoye, inflicting heavy losses on Russian troops a day after top commander General Gennady Troshev crowed that the rebels would be crushed within hours.

Frontline Russian officers said 500 guerrillas were defending the settlement, forcing commanders to order costly infantry assaults on it.

The Chechen Internet website www.kavkaz.org said up to 70 Russians had been killed in the past 24 hours around Komsomolskoye and nearby Goiskoye. It made no mention of Chechen dead.

Russian soldiers interviewed by AFP refused to discuss precise casualty figures but hinted that losses were running high among federal troops, particularly on Wednesday.

"We've tried to approach (the town) several times after artillery fire, but were forced back. We'll have to wait even longer," said Semyon, 26, an interior ministry officer.

"We're being pushed to storm the town so they can announce the war's over, but that only means we take losses," added Yevgeny Maximovich, 30, a defence ministry officer.

"They'll have to keep on bombing it for a lot longer before we can get a foot in," said Yevgeny. "In any case, the war won't be over for a long time.

"We'll have to fight for years here because the Chechens keep reappearing in villages we've already taken," he said gloomily.

The official version was starkly different. More than 150 rebels had been killed and 24 captured Wednesday during mopping up operations in Komsomolskoye for the loss of two Russians, domestic news agencies reported.

The first time we read a frank statement from a russian officer, "We 'll have to fight for years here .....". That is not the problem, the question, will the russians win ? oh sorry, win what ? Oh, I mean will Putin win the election ?
