Chechen Ambush Survivor Says Russians had no Chance
NEAR GALASHKI, May 12, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) Only a second passed from the moment Sergei spotted two Chechen fighters rise atop a nearby hill and a spray of machine-gun and grenade fire that consumed his convoy.
"We were travelling along this road and suddenly I saw two heads pop up over that leafy hill, really close to us, about 30 meters (yards) away," said the 30-year-old, blond-haired Ingush interior ministry soldier.
Although he miraculously escaped injury himself, Sergei spoke slowly and was visibly in shock, his uniform splashed with the blood of his slain comrades.
"About a second later I heard shots. There was a battle."
He said he could not count how many Chechens attacked. At least seven grenade-launchers apparently used by the rebels were discovered near the charred convoy.
Eighteen government troops in the 22-man convoy were killed in Thursday's ambush, 16 of them on the spot. Sergei was one of only two other soldiers to be recovered alive.
One person still remains unaccounted for.
The rebel strike in Ingushetia, a Russian republic neighboring Chechnya which until this point had been primarily known abroad as home to some 200,000 refugees from the Chechen conflict, stunned the military.
Some were saying Thursday that the seven-month war must be stopped before it spreads deeper into other parts of southern Russia, something separatist Chechen warlords have repeatedly threatened to do.
"We didn't expect such an audacious attack on Ingush territory," said Ruslan, who is part of a team leading an investigation into the attack.
"If this conflict is not halted it will cross into other places around here. The war must end."
The spot of the ambush would have been scenic were it not for the horrors of war and bloodshed. The rolling hills are covered with lush forest and the sun was bright and warm.
But in fact it is the spring which has proven to be one of the Russian military's greatest enemies.
In winter months, the rebels were easily spotted against the backdrop of snow, bare trees and rough terrain. Now the fighters are moving about almost at will under the cover of forest.
"We had information that they had slipped into this area, but as you can see it is practically impossible to interfere with their movement now," said one Ingush interior ministry soldier while pointing to the leafy woods.
"In my opinion, looking for the Chechens who did this will do no good. They are long gone."
Indeed, so far the search has uncovered nothing.
"The entire region has been sealed off. We are leading a search through the woods. So far we haven't found anyone," said a Russian soldier named Vadim.
Meanwhile a colonel who was in charge of the stricken column was too furious with having suffered losses to explain why 22 of his soldiers so near the war zone were so lightly armed.
One source here said the Russians had only six guns between them.
"We suffered great casualties. I knew them all -- these were my boys," said the colonel, who refused to give his name.
"There was a battle, they died in battle. The place is covered in blood but we left none of the injured men behind," he said.
"All of those who died fought in Chechnya," he added, contradicting claims by a top Russian general that the dead soldiers had played no part in the battle to crush separatists in the neighboring republic. ((c) 2000 Agence France
Its hard to believe out of 22 guys there was only 6 guns between them. What type of unit was this , a bunch of cooks, or are the Russians that short of equipment. Or is this simply not true, or did they think they wouldn't need guns. Interesting.
Anthony,
I think perhaps you meant the "Reichstag" not the
"Bundestag". The only thing baked in the Bundestag
recently was the CDU and Herr Kohl.
Care to discuss Germany? We could set you up with your own personal board , as you are obviously only interested(and the only one interested) in your monologue.

Gonzo,
Could it be they were just caught unawares?
It doubt it will happen again.
It would be great to have a link though.

Dimitri,
Message received- will answer in a moment.

Kim,
Your words are always welcome and prove to be rationally soothing within this confederacy of cantankerous personalities. At the present time, I'm afraid I shall refrain from further posting due to my strong apathy towards the numbskulled rhetoric which pollutes this sphere of media. Actually my temporary withdrawal-as with my previous abandonments-cannot be characterized by apathetic impulses. This is because a withdrawal in disgust is not to be considered apathetic. I sincerely wish that the only negativity in your life is expereinced only within the realm of this board. All my best wishes to you.
Kim, of course I think they were unaware, it was an ambush. Maybe your implying unprepared, hence they had the guns but were not able to bring them to bear in the fire fight due to incoming fire. Which I could see how someone could report they only had six guns as in only six guys were able to fire back but all the troops had guns. This situation is kind of the same (as in convoys) as in Afganastan and Vietnam for American troops. Convoys are very hard to protect in a gurella war. In vietnam after a few convoys got shot up the US started using "gun trucks" trucks with very powerfull machine guns that laid down an incredible amount of firepower to disrupt an ambush. Some troopers went as far as to use the shell of an knocked out APC sepperate it from the track chassie and mont it over the back of a truck and then the gun trucks would be despersed every 3 or 4 trucks in the convoy in order to bring fire to bear no matter where the convoy was attacked.
Suleyman,
We always seem to meet at the front door.Entering and leaving. All my best wishes to you too. If you would like to remain in touch through another route, I would be extremely pleased to hear from you. If you mail to above link, I'll give you my
email address. I leave it up to you.
Take care
Kim
Gonzo,
I wasn't implying stupidity on your part, but you have come up with another explanation I hadn't really thought of. I meant that they were not seriously expecting to be attacked in Ingushetia, despite the treats from the Chechens to do so.
