Gonzo,

US armed the Mujahideen to the teeth during the Afghan war and after the defeat of Soviet Union started flirting with some guerilla factions to make sure that the weapons will be destroyed by infighting. This is the same trick US used in arming Iraq against Iran during the 8 year long Gulf war and after the war, US played the Kuwaiti card by covertly fuelling the Iraqi invasion to use as a pretext to destroy Iraqi war machine. It is no secret that US intelligence provoked Saddam in his ill fated invasion of Kuwait.

Inhuman sanctions are being levied on Afghanistan although the poor nation suffered heavily in the brutal Soviet invasion which destroyed the infrastructure. US says, Taleban is supposedly following the strict laws and harboring terrorists who were actually groomed by US. In fact Saudi Arabia is also following the same laws but US patronizes Saudi due to strategic oil interests. US is not bothered about any human rights violation in Taleban/Saudi/Kosova or Chechnya but its chief concern is its own selfish interests. Instead of rebuilding the poor nation, US is further destroying the country by imposing inhuman sanctions.

Igor,
Wasn'it in the right of the Latvian to fight the soviet oppressor?
Latvians have close historical and cultural links with german and in WW II they allied with them to fight the soviets.
The problem is that these german were nazis.
This shouldn't shadow the reality of soviet genocide in the Baltic states and in Eastern Europe.
With such historic backgroud, it's normal they wish to join Nato. Although fear from the latvian president are out of date, Russia has enough security problem in his southern border to create some more, we never know what can happend in ten years or so.

Freedom Of Religion In Danger In Russia

Intresting point.
I thing the report doesn't make a diference between religion and sectes. I think the russian law aims at sectes more than at religion. It also aims at so called religious organisation coming to russia with the big money to corrupt the country and influence ignorant poeple.
I mean: jehovists, scientologists, mormons and so on.

Note; no orthodox in the commission...

Saladin,
I would like to accept theory of consparicy and controverse in the Philipine and Algerian cases.
I don't specialy support these government.
Thought the world is decadent, we must not be rule by backward barbaric law such as the sharia or religious fanatism.
Islamists are drowning the Humanity down to the Middle Age. And I beleive it will be worse than Middle Age...
