Russia Says Troops Kill 20 Chechen Rebels

MOSCOW, May 25, 2000 -- (Reuters) A senior Russian commander said on Wednesday that his forces had used artillery to blast a rebel column in breakaway Chechnya, killing dozens of guerrillas.

Colonel-General Gennady Troshev, commanding Russia's forces in the rebel region, was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying that reconnaissance troops found the rebel column moving in the strategically important Argun gorge in south Chechnya.

He said an artillery strike was ordered, killing more than 20 rebel fighters and blowing up six vehicles. The rebel Internet website, kavkaz.org, made no mention of the incident.

Fighting in Chechnya has moved down a scale since Russian forces seized most of the territory in an eight-month-old offensive.

The rebels have mounted raids on Russian forces, resulting in relatively heavy losses, although there seems little chance the guerrillas will dislodge Moscow's troops altogether.

There is also little sign of peace talks between the Russian leadership and Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov.

In a new twist to the conflict, Russian officials on Wednesday repeated threats that Moscow might attack Afghanistan if the ruling Taleban militia was found to be harboring and aiding Chechen rebels.

The threat was first voiced on Monday by Russia's main spokesman on Chechnya, Sergei Yastrzhembsky, and was supported by more senior figures.

"If a potential threat emerges, various actions become possible, including those mentioned by Sergei Yastrzhembsky," Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said in televised comments.

Afghanistan has denied training or supporting the rebels.

My mathematics is fine, indeed it is my best subject. With URN's figures, Igor's house must have 26 bedroom, 26 bathrooms, 13 living and dining rooms. Isn't that a bit too much for a middle aged man living alone with his dog (although admittedly it is a man-eater).

It is your money to waste, but you will need an army of colored immigrant workers maintaining and cleaning it since you won't be able to do it on your own. Imagining you with a vacuum cleaner cleaning a 1300 sq meter house is very funy. About 500 Chechen terrorists, among whom are foreign mercenaries, are currently kept in the pre-trial detention centres of Moscow, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Stavropol (North Caucasian members of the Federation), said Yuri Kalinin, Deputy Justice Minister of Russia, at a briefing in Moscow today.


Kalinin noted in reply to a RIA Novosti question that 15 people are currently kept in the Moscow Lefortovo and Matrosskaya Tishina pre-trial detention centres. He did not specify the names of those who were brought to Moscow for the investigations, but mentioned only Salman Raduyev as the "best known" among them.


The Deputy Minister noted that all inmates are provided with reliable security, and that the criminal case of each will be brought to trial, stressed Yuri Kalinin. He has no doubt that the terrorists will be sentenced most strictly.Now if they have that many captured then how many were killed?

Actually it would be a wonderful experience to live as you described above. Unfortunately I have a small family. My house is nowhere as big as yours, but it is already too big for my family.

I actually believe it was a mistake to buy a large house. Unless you have a gold mine somewhere, you'll soon understand what I mean.
