Chechen rebels said they killed more than 40 Russian soldiers and wounded 50 others in the Chechen capital Grozny on Sunday during an hour-long attack with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

Firstly, I'm not picking on you. I want to seperate fact from fiction. This is pretty hard to do on the internet, where anyone with the skills to set up a website can proport to know the "absolute truth".

The article above by the well-respected Mr G.
Pivots around one paragraph:

If you take this to be the truth, then you lend credence to the rest of the article. If not, then it becomes clear that this piece was written with an agenda.
If what he is saying in that paragraph is true, then why are there no references to specific analyses carried out? Why are there no footnotes?
He is expressing an opinion, but just because he says it doesn't make it true.

From my point of view, to work out out the validity of his arguement, I would have to wade through economic analysis of all the economies of the western world. I don't have the time or inclination, neither would anyone else reading his article. He was counting on that!!!!

My objection to the Emperor's clothes site is that consistently post articles that make statements without backing them up with fact. It is as though they are telling us not to worry about the facts, that they will tell us what to believe. Does that remind you of Jamie Shea, or what?

I'm all for Nato's mistakes being exposed, it serves all of us. But you cannot combat lies with shoddy research. If you are going to take on Goliath, do your homework, or the truth will be lost.

I hope you take the time to read this and understand what I am saying. You are the most challenging poster on this board. All the more reason for me to challeng you back.

The Visegrad States: poor innocent victims of Nato expansion? Really?

Bilateral Military Relations

One important dimension of the new security policies of the Visegrad states has been bilateral cooperation with their immediate neighbours. During the Cold War, these bilateral relations were often very formalised and of limited significance, given the more rigid bipolar structure of European politics at the time.
Today, however, in the context of a more polycentric Europe with a perceived security vacuum in East Central Europe, cordial bilateral relations ase a vital factor in regional stability.

One important aspect of these new bilateral arrangemnts has been military cooperation agreements. These provide for practical military cooperation between armies in a number of areas, and have also promoted an atmosphere of trust and mutually beneficial cooperation between armies. In this way, they have acted as an important confidence- and security-building measure.

After the break-up of the Warsaw Pact and the USSR, the Visegrad countries were keen to negotiate military cooperation agreements with the Soviet successor states- especially Russia. This was important given the prohibitive price of Western Military equipment and their continueing dependence on Russia for most of their military supplies and spare parts- a legacy of the Warsaw Pact days. It also provided a way for Russia to repay some of its outstanding foreign trade debts with the Visegrad States.

Thus in November 1992 Hungary and Russia signed a military cooperation agreement which provided for continuing supplies of Russian-produced military equipment to the Hungarian Army. An even more important deal was reached in June 1993, when Russia agreed to supply Hungary with 28 MiG-29 fighters in partial repayment of unpaid foreign trade debts. This represents the biggest Arms deal in the Region since the demise of the Warsaw Pact.

Hungary has also signed a bilateral military cooperation agreement with Ukraine; Slovakia one with Ukraine; and Poland has concluded simular agreements with Lithuania, Belarus and Ukrains.
