Got to remember, JAG is a product of Hollywood, and is not reality.i guess confusing to some. Russias internial problems are teir business as long as it does not affect or threaten a soverign nation security. I certianly dont thinkthe UN and the worlds opinion should be overcritical on Russias internial problems considering the UNs attitude toward the bombing of Serbia? Lets not be hypicrates. The Soviets were my enemy during my era of active service, now, give them a chance. They've got growing pains.

After reading most of your messages, there appears to be a strong element of sense amongst you. There are a few wise guy's but what would the world be like with out them?
Any war is a tragedy, and a set back for mankind. maybe we will never stop killing each other, but remember this everything terrible needs our love. If you agree or disagree. We, as humans hace demoralised the entire meaning of humanity, we can acquire individual love, peace, power, greed , hate but when will ever truly accept each other as brothers.
Russia has always had bed leaders, that have always supressed ir's people. They are not evil, just powerless. Stalin was as bad as hitler, but terrorism in any nation must be stopped. Russias destruction of chechnya is not a solution, it will never be forgotten and Chechnya terrorism will continue.Ey for an eye. Peace and love, jamie.

Fine, you've called each other names, revealed your own particular brand of bigotry, in the mean time people are dying.
Would anyone like to discuss Chechnya?
Can religious belief, economic self-interest and
political/ideological bias really be a justification for young children freezing to death in their parents arms in Ingushetia?

Terrorism needs to be dealt with, yes, but not at the expense of the general population.
Both the terrorists and Putin's political backers
have forgotten the people they are supposed to represent. This is where national sovereignty should end and international agencies should step
in, not with force, but with incentives for the two sides to negotiate.

The common complaint of the islamic nations is that the international agencies are controlled by the U.S.- This is true to some extent, but seems to dismiss the role other nations have in these bodies. Smaller states in the west are to a large extent dependent on the U.S. for military protection and economic viability. We can't stand up to the biggest kid on the block and give him a bloody nose, but we can influence the decisions he makes through negotiation, by knowing what buttons to press.
What role could the islamic nations play in bringing about peaceful negotiations between the emerging islamic nations of the old soviet Union and the Russian federation?

Or are they just out for confrontation.

Thanks, Jamie,

It was getting a bit too hateful here, wasn't it? Just a little word about Russian racism - dont't get too upset with it, please. I usually call it "naive racism" - lots of Russians do not have much experience of dealing with people of other nations/religions - hence newcomer's uncomfort and vexations at different beliefs and customs (and do not forget, life in Russia is hard at the moment). But, please, could this moron, writing about leftovers from Christmas, stop doing so. If he/she has never experienced pure and mighty feeling of real HUNGER in all the life, what can anyone do? The person lives in cartoon world, but even there the person have to die one day (i.e. deal with reality :)) Cheers, mate!

PS: thanks for the fairy, L'menexe

Chechens counter-attack, Russians admit heavy losses

GROZNY, Russia, Nov 29 (AFP) -

Chechen forces were on the counter-attack Monday, seizing control of a second village in two days as a top Russian general
admitted heavy losses in fierce clashes with Chechen guerrillas.

The reports came as OSCE chief Knut Vollebaek was due in Moscow to discuss a trip to the war zone and visit camps
housing some 233,000 refugees who have fled the fighting in the breakaway Russian republic.

Federal forces meanwhile continued to hammer major Chechen towns, pounding the capital Grozny, the strategic stronghold of
Urus-Martan 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest, and Argun, 10 kilometres east of Grozny.

Chechen officials said Grozny and Urus-Martan had been 80 percent destroyed by a relentless assault from ground-attack
warplanes, helicopter gunships, artillery, tanks and multiple rocket-launchers.

In Moscow, a top Russian general admitted 12 paratroopers had been killed and two captured during a reconnaissance mission
in the southeastern Vedeno district, the fiefdom of leading Chechen field commander Shamil Basayev.

"Our kids were forced to fight to the end. Out of 14 people, 12 people died," Deputy Defence Chief of Staff General Valery
Manilov told state-run RTR television.

The toll was the largest reported by Russian commanders from a single battle with the Chechens. Up to 60 Chechens were
reported killed in the November 17 battle.

Chechen military officials meanwhile said their forces had Monday captured Noibyora, some 50 kilometres (30 miles) east of
Grozny, following the seizure of Novogroznensky, 55 kilometres east of the capital on Sunday.

The Russian defence ministry insisted the settlement was now back under the control of federal forces but declined to comment
on the fall of Noibyora.

Grozny also reported fierce clashes around the nearby village of Alleroi, with both sides taking losses.

Russian commanders said rival infantry units had engaged in fierce exchanges around Alkhan-Yurt, a village at the southwestern
gates of Grozny, disrupting efforts by local elders to negotiate an unopposed entry of Russian troops into the settlement, the
Russian military news agency AVN reported.

The Chechen thrust signalled a switch in tactics heralded 10 days ago. Until now the outgunned guerrillas have avoided pitched
battles with Russian troops who rolled into the rebel republic on October 1.

Russian generals have relied on massive aerial and artillery superiority to force the rebels to give ground rather than risk a
repeat of street battles which led to disastrous losses in the 1994-96 war between the two sides.

The accelerating Russian push has stalled around Urus-Martan, where dogged Chechen resistance has defied Russian
ambitions to capture the town -- which guards vital escape routes from Grozny -- by last week.

Civilians desperate to flee the incessant bombardments -- Grozny's mayor said Saturday that 260 people had been killed in 48
hours of constant attacks -- say Russian warplanes and helicopter gunships make the roads out of the capital too dangerous.

Reports of mounting civilian casualties prompted sharp criticism of the Chechen campaign by Western leaders, including
Vollebaek, current chairman of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

The Norwegian -- who has called for Moscow to produce a timetable for withdrawal from Chechnya -- was due to discuss a
trip to the troubled region.

At the OSCE summit in Istanbul earlier this month Russia agreed to a vague accord which said the pan-European security body
could help end the conflict, but Moscow promptly ruled out any mediation role by the organisation.

Russia says it launched the Chechnya operation to crush Islamic militants and "bandits" blamed for a September apartment
bombing campaign which killed 292 people, and two summer incursions into southern Russia.

Russian generals said last week they had now entered the third and decisive phase of their campaign to destroy "terrorists,"
vowing to bring most of the republic to heel by the end of the year.
