SARASOTA, Fla. (Reuters) - Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) launched an offensive on Monday against Republican George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s record as Texas governor and his verbal ``bumblings and babblings.''

The new change in tone appeared to be in response to the Bush campaign's focus on Gore's so-called exaggerations and embellishments of his record.

The Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) announced three television ads attacking Bush for his alleged ``failed leadership'' on cleaning up the Texas environment, on raising the minimum wage and putting tax cuts above the needs of children.

``There's nothing wrong with your screen,'' said one ad, showing the smoggy skyline of Houston. ``What you're seeing is the worst smog in America. The city: Houston, Texas.''

The ad campaign will cost several million dollars and will run in as many as 11 contested states, including Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Arkansas, Louisiana, Delaware, Missouri, Iowa and West Virginia.

The DNC also unveiled a Web Site dedicated to attacking Bush, who often gets tongue-tied. The DNC site www.democrats.org has have a ``Bush Lite'' link that says Bush has shown ``less leadership, less experience, more right-wing flavor.''

The site pointed out many of his verbal gaffes, including an inability to properly pronounce Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic (news - web sites)'s last name at his debate last week with Gore. It said he once pronounced it ``Milosevick'' and at another juncture it was ``Milosevix.''

It also cited Bush's struggle on Saturday at a Florida rally to explain his own tax policy.

``Gov. Bush seems incapable of talking about the important issues in this campaign in a coherent way. The American people

deserve to hear him explain his policies and address the issues without bumbling and babbling,'' said Bush communications director Mark Fabiani.
