Nemov takes men's all-round title

SYDNEY, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Russia's Alexei Nemov won the Olympic gymnastics men's all-round title on Wednesday, claiming the gold medal that narrowly eluded him in Atlanta.
Nemov, who had to settle for the silver behind Li Xiaoshuang by a wafer-thin .049 of a point four years ago, grabbed the lead on the opening apparatus and never let go, finishing with a total of 58.474.
The 24-year-old Russian, known as Sexy Alexei to his legions of female fans, produced a performance as solid as his chiselled physique, recording top marks in three of the six events and second best on another.

``I just have to thank everyone who supported me,'' said Nemov, after receiving his seventh Olympic medal and third gold. ``I don't believe this has happened to me.

``I was expecting it but I don't believe it.

``The most difficult part of the competition was the start, I felt I could fall at any time.''

Yang Wei, who helped China to its first gold medal in the team event on Monday, added a silver to his total with 58.361 while European all-round champion Alexander Beresh of the Ukraine took the bronze with 58.212.

It was a bitter evening for two-time world champion Ivan Ivankov of Belarus, who missed the Atlanta Games when he tore his Achilles tendon just before the opening ceremony.

Ivankov, featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated's Olympic edition painted in gold, arrived in Sydney as the joint favourite in the all-round alongside Nemov, his friend and former team mate on the Russian junior team before the Soviet Union's break-up.
But while Nemov celebrated, Ivankov fell into his coach's arms, burying his head into his shoulder.

``It was my best effort, all that I could do,'' Ivankov said. ``I do not really feel like I lost, it's sport.

``I won't give up, there's still the apparatus finals.''

It was also an evening to forget for Japan's top medal hope Naoya Tsukahara.

I am fed up with this endless talk about Islam and its superiority over other religions. This confict in Chechnya has nothing to do with religion in a real sense. These heroic mujahideens just have used Islam in a criminal manner to justify their deeds. These rebels claim that the Russians have committed war crimes. I couldn´t agree more. But these crimes have not been committed in a organized way. Putin(or Troshev, for that matter) hasn´t ordered his forces to rape and kill civilians. The Russian forces suffer from low moral and that is the reason for these "occasional" atrocities. This low moral is due mainly to the violation of the international rules of warfare by the Chechens. Here are some examples:

1) The mujahideens still hiding in Grozny(or Dzhohar, as the Chechens call it) or in other cities and villages are being helped by the "innocent" civilian inhabitants. They live in the houses of these so called civilians, are nourished by them and conduct their attacks at nights using these houses as their bases. This is a war crime. The only thing these civilians are allowed to give to the fighters is medical aid according to the Geneva convention on warfare. By not observing these regulations, these civilians have given up their right to be characterised as "innocent civilians". These people can be referred to as common criminals and treated accordingly (sent to a filtration camp, for instance). This does not allow them to be raped, though.

2) Some of the mujahideens wear civilian clothes in daytime and at night time these same folks launch attacks on the Russian patrols. If arrested by the Russians, these people can be shot at once(they can be viewed as murderers, not as rebel fighters).

3) The mujahideens have gone so far that they use women and children in their suicide-bombings. How can you expect the Russian patrols to treat the civilian population of Chechnya with tenderness if anyone who they see on the marketplaces or roads might be a mad suicide-bomber just about to blow himself/herself sky high along with a dozen Russian soldiers?

This is the way in which these brave defenders of Islam act. This is also the reason why Russians should send more troops to the region(130 thousand is not enough when fighting against these people with no respect for any rules whatsoever). And to comment on the figure about the Russian kill ratio presented by "t.o.d" in one letter(10 to one), I must say that that is not accurate. The Russians have quite poor fighting moral and their army is impoverished so despite their vast numerical superiority in both men and equipment, I think that the kill ratio is only about 2 to 1 for the Russians.

And finally an answer to dr. T.A: So you believe that my email address should be published here? What about my home address? You want that too? So you can call your Chechen brothers to blow up my house? I haven´t presented any false information in any of my letters that I have sent here. I am entitled to my own opinion regarding this issue, and it is really your problem if you can´t live with that. And weren´t you the one who took up the subject of terrain differences if Chechnya and Afghanistan. You idiot said that "it was totally different terrain in Afghanistan than in Chechnya". This just shows how ignorant YOU are, although you accuse me of stupidity and ignorance. Next time you write something here, check your information first. That´s all.
